November 11, 1911Major Dhyanchand And His Legends
When Dhyan Chand used to play Hockey, Poets and playwrights used to come to watch because it was pure magic. He was instrumental for winning three consecutive Gold medals in Hockey for India in 1929,1933 and 1936. Dhyan Chand had joined the Indian Army and used to play in the Hockey Team of the Army where he was promoted to the rank of Major.
The 1936 Olympics were being organized by Hitler to Showcase the resurgent and strong Germany after the Humiliation of World War 1 Defeat.
Indian Hockey Team under the captaincy of Dhyan Chand participated at the Berlin Olympics of 1936 and India won a Gold medal again for the third consecutive time.
During his play ,the ball never left the Hockey Stick. It was speculated that Hitler asked the officials to check his Hockey Stick for any magnets because he was able to maneuver the ball so well .
It is believed that Hitler offered him the post of Colonel in the General Army along with German Citizenship having been so impressed with his skills of Playing hockey.
Men like Dhyan Chand are born once in an Era and fade away into eternity without any publicity and fanfare due to them which India as a nation should have accorded to the Legend.
Very few of us are aware that birthday of Major Dhyanchand is celebrated as the Sports Day of Independent India
