Blitzkrieg in London

We shall Overcome…

British Grit and Courage in the Face of War and Crisis.

Mr Shanti Bhushan, Sr Advocate narrated an incident pertaining to Dr Kailash Nath Katju regarding the quality of British Judges.

Mr Bhushan as a young lawyer was visiting the library in Allahabad High Court in 1940s and was introduced to Dr K.N Katju who was reading a judgment of House of Lords and was very impressed. Dr Katju handed the judgment to Mr Vishwamitra( father of shanti Bhushan ) and asked his opinion.

Vishwamitra pointed out that it is a good judgment on labour law regarding some complicated of Law issue explained lucidly and based on sound reasoning.

Dr K N Katju pointed out that there is something more significant in the judgment than the principles laid down so lucidly and dispassionately.

He said to check the date of the judgment more particularly.

It was delivered on the day when Battle of Britain or Blitz was at it’s peek .

Hitler’s Lutwaffe ( Air Force) had bombed London for 60 days continuously in August and September 1940.

London was most heavily bombed on the day of the judgment and Look at this British judge who has delivered the judgment in a dispassionate manner when there was imminent threat to life and safety.

This is the quality of British judges and also reflects courage and grit in the face of imminent threat to life and safety.

With equanimity, grit and resilience WE shall overcome
