The court jester of the Pennington family who were Royalty and owned Muncaster Castle in Britain.

Tom is the short form of Thomas and he lived around the time of Henry the VII th .

Tom was witty, funny and played pranks and tricks as was his job as a court jester. Behind this outer facade was a devious and cruel mind.

He used to sit on the Road and deliberately mislead passersby to walk into quicksand where many strangers perished.

Once his master’ s daughter fell in love with a carpenter, Tom was assigned the job to resolve the problem.

Tom befriended the carpenter and with his jokes and stories entertained him. Since the family of the girl was against the match, Tom promised support to help the girl elope with the carpenter.

One night after having extra drinks, Tom helped the carpenter back to his home where workshop was.

In the morning the Carpenters head was found on the street. The hit movie “joker” of Joaquin Phoenix has some similarity to Tom the fool.

PS – The word “Tomfoolery” has origins in the story of Tom the Fool.

Today also Every year at Muncaster castle in Britain there is a competition for jesters and the award is given for best jester by the Pennington family which still owns and manages the castle.
