November 24, 2025The Naval U Boat Submarine Base in Bordeaux
The Naval U Boat Submarine Base in Bordeaux, South West France on the Coast of Atlantic. Built by Nazis during occupation of France From 1940s onwards. This served as a major base for submarines during the ‘Atlantic War’ Atlantic War was called the Longest, Largest and Most complex of All naval battles. The German U Boat Submarines destroyed and sunk the shipments carried in Merchant vessels from USA for allies.
The Allies navy primarily lead by British had various combats with the German U Boats and succeeded in neutralising the threats from these submarines. The British RAF also bombarded the Base and caused significant damage to the base as well as the port city of abordeaux. Finally Germany was defeated on 8th May 1945 and world war 2 ended with the Victory day. The New state of France under Charles Degaulle took over the reigns of power. The naval base being a Reminder of Nazi occupation and atroicities in France was not destroyed but was used for French Navy.
Today the whole base is made into an Art and Cultural Centre.
